No, the girl in the photo is not a fashionable new pop star hitting the scene; she is the director behind some of your favourite pop diva’s -- the girls and the boys -- eye-popping videos. Read More. ♦

We often don’t think about the person behind our favourite videos, but if you dig a little deeper you will discover one name time and time again, and that is Melina Matsoukas.

Matsoukas is the creator behind many of the hottest fiercest videos put out in the past 10 years. I came across the name-behind-the-videos last year when Wild Belle’s debut video “Keep You” came out. I soon realized that half the videos on my iPod were directed by Matsoukas.

The Bronx born, New York University film graduate (she also has a master’s degree from the Los Angeles American Film Institute), has directed videos for Snoop Dogg – er, I mean, Snoop Lion – No Doubt, the Rihanna/Calvin Harris collaboration, “We Found Love,” which was nominated for a Grammy and won a Video of the Year award at the VMAs in 2013, and Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” – a personal fav. (She’s directed 10 Bey and 5 RiRi videos thus far).

I must say, I love me some Melina Matsoukas videos and I think she is one of the most brilliant visual artists around. It appears that just like Spike Jonze, Matsoukas plans to bring her idiosyncratic talent to the big screens, which is nothing but exciting.

So, take a moment to enjoy the visual eye candy that only Ms. Melina can serve you. Chaka V.
