Even during soundcheck Lili Kendall sounded gorgeous, her youthful R&B tinged voice fluttering through the tiny back room of Czehoski followed the moody set by Hoodlem. While her band prepared, the 16-year-old, newly blonde, stood on stage with arms crossed shyly. As with Hoodlem, Kendall’s band seemed plagued by tech issues, but even without much backing it became clear that Kendall would sound fantastic if forced to perform A capella. And since Kendall’s pretty voice requires no synths or programs to grab attention, they stripped it all back rather than fight with tech problems — her guitarist Kam and drummer Austin played simply, allowing Kendall’s voice to shine.
“I’m very excited to be here tonight,”said the Brisbane teen after her fantastic first song, “Everybody Just Move.” She went on to sing one great pop song after another, including “The Unknown,” which has been getting her a lot of buzz. Her take on Rihanna’s “Stay” was a bare bone acoustic rendition that felt just as moving as the original.
Kendall’s set felt far too short but at the end of it she sweetly offered free copies of her single. It’s clear this young girl has what it takes to make it and it won’t be a surprise if we hear big things coming from her in the next few years.
